Book Review #6: Tempted by P.C. Cast + Kristen Cast

“If you can’t trust your best friend with your deepest darkest secret, who can you trust?”

“Dark secrets and unspoken suspicions come between Zoey and Stevie Rae, putting their friendship-and the House of Night-at risk. After Zoey Redbird and her gang have banished Kalona and Neferet from Tusla, you’d think they’d catch a break. But with Zoey and her sexy warrior Stark both recovering from a brush with death, and the fledgelings struggling to deal with the fallout from Neferet’s reign of terror, a break is just not in the forecast. Zoey is haunted by her confusing yet elemental connection with A-ya, the ancient Cherokee maiden who was the only human able to tempt Kalona’s body and soul. How will A-ya’s pull on her affect Zoey’s ability to resist the dangerously seductive immortal? Meanwhile, Stevie Rae, with her super red-vamp powers, always thought she could handle the stuff she’s been keeping from her BFF. But the mysterious, threatening force lurking in the tunnels under the Tusla Depot is spreading. Stevie Rae won’t confide where she’s been and what she’s doing, and Zoey is beginning to wonder just how much she can trust the person she always thought would have her back. Will their choices destroy them and will darkness consume the House of Night?”

This is the sixth novel in the house of night series. Even though Kalona and Neferet are banished from Tulsa, they haven’t run off to lick their wounds, they have only just begun.

Each chapter begins with a name, Zoey is always first person and others are third person. This gives us room for more sub-plots and relief from the boredom that may loom in this novel. It was boring at certain points, otherwise, without the threat of Kalona giving the story some ump, it was good. The subplots with Stevie Rae I particularly liked. They were the best part of the story.

Book Review #3: Hunted by P.C. Cast + Kristin Cast

“What if the hottest guy in the world was hiding a nameless evil, and all he wanted was you?”

“At the start of this heart-pounding new installment of the bestselling House of Night series, Zoey and her gang must discover a way to deal with an unexpected danger that might bring them all down. Neferet guards her powerful new consort, Kalona, who looks gorgeous and has the House of Night under his spell. A past life holds the key to breaking his rapidly spreading power, but what if it shows Zoey truths she can’t face? Meanwhile, the red fledglings have cleaned up well, but are they really as friendly as they seem? On the boyfriend front, Zoey has a chance to fix things with her super-hot ex, Erik, but she can’t stop thinking about Stark, the archer who died in her arms, and she is driven to save him from Neferet’s sinister infulence. Will anyone believe the power evil has to hide among us?”

This was by far the best book of the series. At first I was kind of not expecting the whole Kalona legend becoming the climax in the series, and him coming back kind of confirmed it to be the conflict. But I actually think this was a great and unique twist to the story. Also, I have yet to look up whether it was an actual Cherokee legend.

Personally I actually like Stark better at this point, even though I at first Zoey fixes things with Erik, but at a point when Heath and Erik butt heads, Erik is more possessive and controlling with Zoey.

Zoey goes through so much growth in this series, this book especially. She goes to fulfill her destiny as High Priestess in training, despite all the stress that is put on her she manages not to crumble under the pressure. She definitely fits the heroine status now.

Book Review #1: Untamed by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

(Warning this post may contain spoilers, lulz of course it does!)

I just finished this book today, Untamed by P.C. Cast + Kristen Cast. It is the fourth book in the series, The House of Night.

Untamed Book Cover

The series follows Zoey Redbird, a girl who was marked as a fledgling, which  means that in a few years she may turn into a vampyre. In this world, the people know about the existence of vampyres and most famous people (shows allusions to actual celebrities) are vampyres as well. But these are a different kind of vampyres than most are accustomed to. The fledglings have a crescent moon on their forehead. Adult vampire have more markings. The House of Night is a boarding school for fledglings in Tusla, Oklahoma. They are taught different subjects than a normal high school  and day is night for the fledglings. Zoey learns that she is special, having more marks than her peers and having an affinity for all five elements (Wind, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit).

In this novel, the High Priestess for the school, Neferet, declares war on the humans after the death of two teachers. Also, her best friends at the school have stopped trusting her after all of the things Zoey didn’t tell them. Zoey’s recent ex-boyfriend Erik also hates her, after she had an affair with one of the dead teachers, Loren Blake, who used her. She also has broken her Imprint with her human ex-boyfriend, Heath, who she hasn’t spoken to. And on top of all that, her best friend, Stevie Rae, died and was brought back to life as a different kind of fledgling who has lost their humanity and thirsts for blood, a red fledgling. Stevie Rae is finally has her humanity back to normal, but she is kept hidden from the school.

This novel compared to the first, had you reeled in from the beginning. It made you feel empathy for Zoey and you hoped her friends would come to their senses. The story is pretty action packed, with pauses for relief at all the right times. The ending really made me want to crack open the next book and start reading. This series is highly addictive and won’t disappoint. The growth in these characters are wonderful and the Aphrodite and Zoey relationship is comical.

Rating: Three and a half stars
