“Marked as a fledgling. Captured by Love. Challenged by an unrelenting evil…”
“In the early nineteenth-century England, long before he’s a professor at the Tulsa House of Night, Bryan Lankford is a troublesome yet talented human teen who thinks he can get away with anything…until his father, a wealthy nobleman, has finally had enough, and banishes him to America. When Bryan is Marked by a vampyre on the docks and given the choice between the London House of Night and the dragon prowed ship to America, he chooses the dragon-a new name and a brand new fate.
Becoming a fledgling may be exciting, but it opens a door to a dangerous world. In 1830s St. Louis, the Gateway to the West, Dragon Lankford becomes Sword Master, and soon realizes there are both frightening challenges and beautiful perks… such as Anatasia, the captivating young professor of Spells and Rituals at Tower Grove House of Night, who really should have nothing to do with a fledgling.
But when a dark power threatens, Dragon is caught in it’s focus. Though his uncanny fighting skills make him a powerful fledgling, is he strong enough to ward off evil while protecting Anatasia as well? Will his choices save her-or destroy them both?”
The mother daughter team has done it again for me. With beautiful sketches from the artist Kim Dower (who also did the Fledgling Handbook 101 art) it really completes the story. I really get more of an understanding of Dragon’s past and more of an understanding of Anastasia as well. It also prepares you for the newest book of the House of Night, Destined. It was good that they branched from the little bubble of Tusla. Overall an amazing story (also the lesbian High Preistess was nice nod to the LGBT community, as Damien and Jack was as well).
“At the brink of destruction, what will on desperate girl do to keep her heart from being irreparably broken?”
“Exonerated by the Vampyre High Council and returned to her position of High Priestess at Tusla’s House of Night, Neferet has sworn vengeance on Zoey. Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Z. But Zoey has found some sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgaich to take over for her there. Being Queen would be cool, wouldn’t it? Why should she return to Tusla? After losing her human consort, Heath, she will never be the same- and her relationship with her super-hot Warrior, Stark, may never be the same either.
And what about Stevie Rae and Rephaim? The Raven Mocker refuses to be used against Stevie Rae, but what choice does he have when no one in the entire world, including Zoey, would be okay with their relationship? Does he betray his father or his heart?”
Oh Rephaim, why don’t you choose me instead of Stevie Rae? I’m sure she’ll be fine with Erik or something. I was thinking this was supposed to be the last novel of the House of Night, but Destined is to be released Oct. 25, so I don’t have to wait too long to get my Rephaim fix.
So this novel really showed some growth in the story, from both Stevie Rae and Zoey. Zoey learned to put her friends before her own needs and strives to not crumble under the mess that she and her friends have gotten into. This book surprised me with new twists and turns and being sexy. (And also I can’t picture how Stevie Rae kisses Rephaim when he has a bird’s head, probably a break too.
Also (spoiler: It was definitely hard to picture Neferet naked. Yuck.)
So overall this novel was pretty solid, with barely any boring parts and was satisfying. I have nothing bad to say about it except that I was frustrated with Neferet (who isn’t?).
“When friends stop trusting each other, Darkness is there to fan the flames…”
“Things have turned black at the House of Night. Zoey Redbird’s soul has shattered. With everything she’s ever stood for falling apart making her want to stay in the Otherworld forever, Zoey’s fading fast. It’s seeming more and more doubtful that she will be able to pull herself back together in time to rejoin her friends and set the world to rights. As the only living person who can reach her, Stark must find a way to get to her. But how? He will have to die to do so, the Vampyre High Council stipulates. And then Zoey will give up for sure. There are only seven days left. Enter BFF Stevie Rae. She wants to help Z, but she has massive problems of her own. The rogue Red Fledglings are acting up, and this time not even Stevie Rae can protect them from the consequences. Her kinda boyfriend, Dallas, is sweet but too nosy for his own good. The truth is, Stevie Rae’s hiding a secret that might be the key to getting Zoey home-but it also threatens to explode her whole world. In the middle of the whole mess is Aphrodite: ex-Fledgling, trust-fund baby, total hag from Hell (and proud of it). She’s always been blessed (if you could call it that) with visions that can reveal the future, but now it seems that Nyx has decided to speak through her with the goddess’s own voice, whether Aphrodite wants it or not. Aphrodite’s loyalty can swing a lot of different ways, but right now Zoey’s fate hangs in the balance. Three girls, playing with fire…if they don’t watch out, everyone will get Burned.”
It is sort of odd that Kalona did not appear till near the end of the story, even though he was released into the Otherworld at the very beginning of the novel. I was surprised how much of Stevie Rae’s storyline appeared in the story. I love Rephaim and Stevie Rae as a couple as much as the next House of Night fan, but it’s a little much considering Zoey’s the main character. Regardless, Zoey is unable to keep things very interesting in the Otherworld. I thought it was okay. Also, I’m not sure what I think about this one. I think the girl on the cover’s supposed to be Stevie Rae, but I don’t think I really imagine her as a blonde even though she is described as such.
Here’s what I’m on the fence about. The whole thing with Raven Mockers. Here is what Cherokee legends depicted them to be.
See, I’ve never really pictured Rephaim with a beak or feathers on his body. I pictured him more like this:
Since he’s his father’s favourite son, he would look more like Kalona. The other ones I picture, look more like Ravens because they are the evil ones.
